Supporting Individuals on the Autism Spectrum

Workshop Description

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that is characterized by difficulty in social interaction and communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior; deficits of ASD vary in severity from person to person.

In 2018, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined that approximately 1 in 59 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder and it is estimated that over the next decade, approximately 500,000 teens on the spectrum will enter into adulthood.

There is no cure for ASD, and arguably, no need for one; rather, just a need for more education and awareness around what autism means and how it can affect those diagnosed; particularly because when given a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, it impacts more than just the individual with ASD. Family members, caretakers, friends, loved ones, etc., experience diagnosis-based stressors too.
